Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India] September 18: Mrs. Jyoti Mayal, President of the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), has become a monumental figure in the travel and tourism industry, playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of travel in India and beyond. As the face of the industry, Mrs. Mayal’s leadership has not only helped glide through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic but has also set a course for sustainable growth, innovation, and collaboration within the sector in Gujarat. Moreover, she has been closely working with the Government of Gujarat to provide industry status for travel agents, which would serve as a major boost for the whole sector.
During the pandemic, Mrs. Mayal took significant steps to address the hardships faced by travel agents and operators, spearheading a series of skilling and upskilling initiatives in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism (MoT). This effort ensured that TAAI members remained equipped to adapt to the evolving landscape. Her persistent advocacy for agent rights led to successful negotiations for refunds from airlines, while her work with the Ministry of External Affairs enabled the smooth reopening of visa processes, further supporting the recovery of the sector.
In a landmark initiative before the second phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, TAAI, under Mrs. Mayal’s leadership, organised a Knowledge Conclave in collaboration with the Gujarat Government. This initiative brought 220 members to the iconic Statue of Unity, a bold step that significantly boosted domestic tourism during a critical time. Moreover, In June 2023, Mrs. Mayal was invited to the prestigious G20 Tourism Meet at Goa, where she played an influential role in shaping key deliberations. Supported by TAAI, she helped showcase the strengths of India’s tourism industry to global guests — showcasing India’s tourism and hospitality to the world.
Under her leadership, TAAI played an instrumental role in initiating flights between India and Sri Lanka, specifically to Jaffna & India and Cambodia, opening new avenues of connectivity. Mrs. Mayal’s vision for expanding travel options between India and neighboring countries has strengthened international relations and enhanced opportunities for tourism.
A strong proponent of sustainability, Mrs. Mayal has consistently emphasised the need for responsible tourism practices. Her efforts to promote eco-friendly travel have placed sustainability at the forefront of TAAI’s agenda. Additionally, her campaign for the recognition of travel agents’ industry status continues to gain momentum, advocating for better policy support and financial stability for agents across the country.
